Where Do I Find the Time?

In the previous chapter we discuss the importance of being prolific. We talked about how important it was to walk to write a number of songs. I know many of you are thinking “I lead a pretty busy life where my going to find the time to write songs?” This chapter addresses how to maximize a little time we have in this busy life.

A Place to Create

As songwriters we all need a place to go to work, away from distractions. As I’ve mentioned before, songwriting can be a very lonely endeavor, and it’s easy to become distracted. If you do become distracted you’re going to want to continue where you left off. So if you leave a half finished song on a table or on the floor, it will be there when you return.

We live in very busy times and, if your life is anything like mine, you often only have 15 or 20 minutes to work on a song.  It can even be a corner in a bedroom, just somewhere where you can go to create, somewhere on the following day you can be confident that whatever you left there will still be where you left it. If you live with anyone else be sure to let them know that they shouldn’t touch any of the Items In your workspace.

Your safe space also needs to be a place where either no one can overhear you, or if they do, it’s someone who’s nonjudgmental. You have to be free to sound terrible to create something original. Nothing sounds great from the get go.
