Rhyming

To Rhyme or Not to Rhyme

Let’s start our discussion of rhyming by asking “Do we really need to rhyme in songs? Is it really that important?” Well the answer, like most things, is complex. No, you don’t need to rhyme in songs. There have been many great songs that have no rhymes whatsoever in them but too often, especially among beginning songwriters, the case they make has more to do with their inability to rhyme rather than with their desire for communication.

I have noticed in my teaching experience that often beginning songwriters will write without rhyme. Often the reason is that it’s much more difficult to be eloquent and also have the words rhyme. My personal opinion is that songwriters should never avoid rhyming simply because it’s difficult. When a songwriter expresses themselves in an eloquent way and it rhymes it’s all the more amazing, and for that reason often listeners are more enamored of the work. Listeners also remember songs that rhyme more easily.

And if you start the song in rhyme, I believe that it should stay in rhyme and the rhyming scheme should stay consistent.
