Rhyming (continued)

Rhyming Schemes

For those of you who don’t know what we mean by ‘rhyming scheme’ the definition is as follows:

“The pattern of rhymes, esp. end rhymes, used in a piece of verse, usually indicated by letters”

Let’s identify the rhyming scheme in the following verse by assigning the same letter to each ending word in each line that rhymes. If it doesn’t rhyme with a previous ending word in the same verse we’ll assign it a new letter.

You can hear a recording of Matter of Time HERE.

MATTER OF TIME
(written by Jim Bruno)

Keep your hat on your head (A)

Keep your eyes on the road (B)

Always follow your heart (C)

Or your heart will explode (B)

And so the rhyming scheme for this verse: A/B/C/B

If we were to change the order of the lines the rhyming scheme would change. For instance:

Keep your hat on your head (A)

Always follow your heart (B)

Keep your eyes on the road (C)

Or your heart will explode (C)

The rhyming scheme now becomes A/B/C/C and so on and so forth.
