Cons of Co-Writing

Sadly, co-writing is not all positive. Here are some issues to consider…

Defending Your Work

Whan you’re writing by yourself you don’t have anyone else challenging your work. Maybe there’s a phrase in a song that you just like, that you can’t defend intellectually but you may have to if you’re co-writing.

Art by Committee

Art by committee is rarely a good idea. Bold new ideas are often discouraged and playing it safe is often more typical.

Creativity on Demand

I don’t know about you but I need to have the muse with me when I sit down to write. I’m often unable to write at times. Sometimes I’m on fire and I’m in a very creative mood. Other times I can’t get anything on the page. All my ideas seem tired and worn out but when you co-write you sometimes don’t have that luxury. You are sitting there in the writing room and your expected to produce. This can be next to impossible for some.

Splitting the Royalties

Let’s say you finally get a break and that song you’ve been singing has finally found it’s audience. Wouldn’t it be great if you didn’t have to split the royalties with any other writer.

Co-writing does have it’s ups and downs. I personally enjoy it. I was resistant for a long time but eventually came around to enjoying it as long as it’s with the right person or persons.
