Don’t Overwrite

By “don’t overwrite” I mean don’t be afraid to keep things simple. Almost always simple is better than complex. Don’t feel like you must have 20 different chords in a song and try to cover every aspect of a relationship or whatever the song is about. Less is more should be your manta. Stay focused and keep it simple.

Also a common mistake that beginners make is writing songs that are too long. Once you’re over 4 minutes or so you’re asking more and more from your listener and everything we do is with our listener in mind. If you’re one of many songwriters who write songs for therapy, to have an artistic outlet for your inner thoughts and emotions then go ahead and ignore your listener. There’s nothing wrong with that approach but understand that your song will never have an impact beyond yourself. If however you want your song to have impact with your listeners I urge you to always keep that in mind. We’re not striving to impress our listener with how clever we are. We’re striving to demonstrate how much we have in common with our listener. We want them to feel what we feel and when they hear a song we’ve written we want them to empathize with us. We want our sad songs to make them sad. We want our love songs to remind them of what falling in love feels like. We want our dance songs to inspire them to get up and dance and so on.
