Okay now that we know what to focus on we can evaluate the song like a songwriter would.
Is the song too long? Too short?
What’s the best written verse? Why?
What’s the weakest verse? Why?
Does the chorus stick in your brain?
Can you name the title by listening to the song?
Are the rhymes unexpected or can you predict them?
Does the song have a bridge?
Does the bridge work?
Does the bridge come in at the right time?
Is the concept original?
If not original, does the concept engage you in a unique way?
And so on….
By becoming accomplished song evaluators we can better evaluate our own songs applying these elements.
