The Rewrite

They say what separates the beginners from the pros is the Rewrite. Previously I mentioned that beginners often have a love affair with their first draft. I’m not sure if it’s naivete or laziness that causes this phenomenon, but I see it all the time. In fact I was prone to it early on.
The Rewrite is extremely important. It’s the process of applying the same evaluation process that we just talked about regard the songs of others. What makes it especially challenging is that it’s too often difficult to be objective with our own work. It’s important to be as clear eyed as possible when attempting to improve our songs. We need to see which verse is best and then be able to figure out what makes it superior. We have to be honest with ourselves regarding the length of the song. Are we asking too much of listeners? Does our song need a bridge? If so where should we put it? And so on…
We cannot treat our songs with kid gloves. As previously mentioned we need to be fair with our creations. Not too hard and not too soft.
